Debate begins over free parking promotion

Chalfont St Peter parish council has been considering new ways of promoting the free hour's car parking in the village.
For a number of years, the car park in Church Lane had been free to use for one hour, but in April 2007, this changed when it was decided to charge people for parking there.

However, in July this year the car park would became free again for an hour in order to encourage more cars to park there and to help businesses in the village.
The parish council, chamber of commerce and village association all worked together to produce the £17,556 annual fee that allowed the free hour to be reinstated.
Since then however, the number of cars parked there has remained disappointing, so at its meeting on Monday night, the parish council discussed ways of making people more aware that the car park is free to use for an hour.
Councillor Isobel Darby said: "I think we should talk to the chamber of commerce and village association again about trying to promote this. I would suggest that we produce a poster that is displayed in every shop window along Market Place and the High Street saying that there is a free car park a few minutes' walk away.
"The shops should be keen to help us promote this because the free car park benefits them. At the moment, there are nowhere near enough people using that car park, which is very disappointing, so something clearly needs to be done to make people more aware that they can park for free in the village very close to all the shops that we have here."
