War hero wins award
A resident at a nursing home has been rewarded for her heroism during the Second World War by the Duchess of Cornwall.
Joan Crane, 87, who lives in Abbeyfield Home, Chalfont St Peter, is one of the seven remaining members of the Flying Nightingales team that were tasked with bringing soldiers back from Europe during the war.
She and the other members of her team were presented with the lifetime achievement award at the first ever Military and Civilian Health Partnership Awards at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea.
Miss Crane said: "I was absolutely over the moon to receive the award. We had a very nice time when we visited the hotel and we were very well looked after. I can't remember anything that the Duchess said to me though because I was on too much of a high."
Miss Crane flew to various sites in Europe at the end of the war, bringing wounded men back to the country who would otherwise have been unable to return.
She added: "People think that it must have been a difficult job but we did not think of it like that. It was just something that had to be done. One of the most difficult jobs was bringing the soldiers back who had been in a prisoner of war camp. They were just skin and bones and it still brings tears to my eyes thinking about it. They told me to make sure that they weren't asleep when we reached the white cliffs of Dover, because that was the site that they had been longing to see, so when we got there I had to wake them up to make sure they didn't miss it.
"Receiving the award is very nice because it shows that people are aware of what we did during the war."
