Fundraiser to trek Arctic for NSE
A fundraiser who has raced across the Sahara for the National Society for Epilepsy (NSE) is now planning on trekking through the Arctic Circle to raise cash for the charity.
Keith Flood, 51, is planning a 350 mile footrace through the hazardous conditions, described as the most extreme marathon on the planet.
All the money he raises by taking part in the event will go to the NSE in Chalfont St Peter, to go along with the £27,000 he raised in 2007 by competing in the exhausting Marathon De Sables six day endurance event across the Sahara.
The Arctic trek is the equivalent of 14 ordinary marathons and sees competitors starting in Eagle Plains in the Yukon area of Canada and finishing on the banks of the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk in the north-west part of the country.
People taking part are expected to complete the race in less than eight days and have to drag all their equipment and food on sleds while fighting against the hostile environment where temperatures can fall to as low as minus 65 degrees.
On top of that, they also have to be prepared for the potential hazards of breaking through the ice, snow storms and unexpected encounters with wildlife.
Mr Flood, who lives in Hertfordshire, said: "I will be pitting my fitness and mental stamina against dangerous and hazardous foes. This is a more dangerous and difficult challenge than the race across the Sahara.
"The route that I will be taking covers the line of the Arctic Circle and traverses the length of one of the most northern regions in the dead of winter."
Mr Flood is hoping to raise £75,000 by taking part in the challenge.
He added: "If you phoned in to vote on The X Factor, I'm a Celebrity or Strictly Come Dancing, then please consider sacrificing just a little more."
