Chalfont St Peter C of E School in planned move to Holy Cross

A Chalfont St Peter School which dates back to the Victorian era could re-locate to the site of a former convent school in order to make way for new housing.
Chalfont St Peter C of E School, which is currently based in Penn Road, wants to move to the site of the former Holy Cross School, which closed its doors in 2006.

The plan, which was presented by head teacher John Underwood at Chalfont St Peter's annual parish meeting last week, would leave the school's current site unoccupied.
This would mean that the existing site would be free to accommodate the housing earmarked for the village after the government demanded that Chiltern District Council must find room for 2,900 houses in the district by 2026.
Chalfont St Peter C of E School is currently hugely overcrowded, so Mr Underwood believes that the village would be best served if it moved to the the Holy Cross site, which would not only enable the school to accommodate more children, but would also protect the historic convent site from developers.
He said: "Our school is a beautiful Victorian building, but it was designed for 60 children and we currently have 360, so we currently have to turn people away. If hundreds of new houses are built, where are the hundreds of families going to send their children? It is not just our school that has this problem, but every school in this area.
"The Holy Cross site is currently unused, and has all the facilities needed for a school, including classrooms and a playing field. It is also big enough to accommodate many more children than we are able to, and it also has facilities for adult learning. These facilities could be used by the whole village, not just our school. It would be a waste if they were to disappear."
The Holy Cross site dates back to the 13th Century and is owned by an order of nuns based in Switzerland.
Richard Allen, chairman of the parish council, said: "The site is currently unused and is very attractive for developers. Moving the C of E School to that area is a good way of stopping that happening."
