Students litter village following end of exams

RESIDENTS of Chalfont St Peter were left angered this week after youths celebrating the end of their exams partied outside into the early hours and littered picturesque parts of the village.
On Monday afternoon, Year 11 pupils at the Chalfonts Community College descended on Gold Hill Common after completing the last of their GCSE exams.

Onlookers said that they turned up with bottles and cans of alcohol and that many of them stayed there until the early hours of the morning.
When they eventually left, the common, which is currently being prepared for the large Feast Day event on Saturday, was left with bottles, food wrappers and cans strewn across it.
The parish council were forced to send a haywarden along to clear up the debris, and he was aided by workers from the Community College, after principal Sue Tanner had surveyed the scene.
One resident, who lives nearby and asked not to be named, said: "They left it in a terrible mess and they were for a very long time so god knows what state they were in.
"I went out the next morning and it was disgraceful. There were two young lads still there and I asked them where they had spent the night and they said that they didn't know.
"Everyone can understand youngsters wanting to celebrate after finishing their exams but this was ridiculous and it showed a complete lack of respect for the village where they go to school. With Feast Day coming up, I would imagine it was the last thing that cleaning up this mess is the last thing the parish council needed."
Principal Sue Tanner apologised unreservedly to residents and said that she would speaking to the year group when they are next all at school.
She said: " As soon as I heard about it I went down there and I have to say I was shocked and upset, so I would like to give my apologies on behalf of the students.
"I am very, very disappointed in them. They have let themselves and the school down, and I will be making them aware of this when I next see them.
"This sort of incident is rare and it is clear that high spirits after finishing exams simply got out of hand, but this is still no excuse."

We'd like to hear from you.

I still found shards of glass on the common on Wednesday morning which I put in the bin but be careful with your dogs and kids.

I think there could be a few problems on Feast Day with the broken glass hidden in the grass.

I heard that the police where out at 3am rounding up the last of the troublemakers.

Why were they not there earlier and where are the parents?

this reflects really badly on the kids, parents and police.

Well done to the Parish Council for getting out so early the next morning to try to clean up the worst of the mess.

I suggest that the feast festival should be alterd.
They should eat humans instead, it would make it alot more interesting and fun.

I've got a ballot for it going at.

I was in one of the few groups that didn't drink and cleared away after themselves.
What my peers did was upto them and my friends and I am not sorry for there actions.
I felt sorry for the people who had to clean the common up.
Most parents were aware of students drinking, some even brought drink to their sons/daughters.
Are the papers also aware of the fights that happened?
Why only mention the litter?
Why not the Fights that have happened?
I agree that the common was left in a state but my word we had a great time. with or with out the need to drink.
It goes to show some people have respect for the community and some havn't.

BASCIALLY YOU ALL KNEW IT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN IT DOES EVERYYEAR BUT THEN AGAIN YOU DONT TRY TO STOP IT
MAYB TRY PUTTING A BIG BIN IN THE MIDDLE SO PEOPLE DONT HAVE TO WALK ALL ACCROSS THE COMMON
BECAUSE LEATS FACE IT NEXT YEAR ITS JUST GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN
SO WHY NOT TRY AND PREPARE FOR IT
BUT IF THE POLICE TRY AND GET RID OF EVERYONE THEY ARE ONLY GOING TO GO DOWN TO VILLAGE AND RUIN THAT SO JUST GET A BIG METAL BIN CONTAINER AND PUT IT IN THE MIDDLE SO PEOPLE HAVE SOMEWHERE CLOSE TO THEM FOR THERE RUBBISH NOT ALL THEY WAS ACROSS THE COMMON

THAT WAS JUST SUM ADVICE FOR YOU FOR NECT YEAR

if these so called students are our future we have no future.

This sort of thing only happens once a year, before they go into the world of work. For goodness' sake, let the kids enjoy their last days of freedom and enjoy themselves for once.
Anyone who complains probably either has no children, or locks them away in their rooms.
Many of the students are actually bright, polite and sensible. Don't judge all of them by this example.

To Charles.

There is enjoying yourselves and enjoying yourselves.
You did not see the common at 6.00am the next day. You did not hear the language and see the broken Jack Daniels Bottles and vodka bottles You did not see scorch marks from the fires lit on the common.
Next year, invite them all to your back garden and put up with the mess etc and see how you like it.
Perhaps I may lobby to get drinking banned in public places if this is going to happen every year. Are you allowed to drink in public places when you are only 16 0r 17 I don't know.
We are not saying they can't enjpoy themselves, just saying show a bit or respect. For your information I have 2 grown up children one attended the school neither of them caused this kind of problem when the finished their GCSE's.

Lin, please do not jump to conclusions, I did see the common the next day. I did indeed hear the language from the children and see the fires. I live across the road.
The common is not your back garden, it is a public area. No one moans when the car park in the village is vandalised, or when adult drunks stagger through the skate park and litter along the way every weekend.
If you want to get drinking banned in public places, you'll be wasting your time. A pub is a public place, is it not?

Hi all.

Just so it is clear there were three of us in the morning and not two. The three of us had cleared up all of our mess during the evening into my rucksack and in the morning we actually cleared up some of others mess. This "dog walker" stuck her camera right in our faces and took photos of us. All we did was greet her with a good morning. There is no law on staying up or night unless I am mistaken. I understand she may have been annoyed but to blame us I find is unfair.

Also i would like to bring attention to the fact that there were many people on the common from surrounding schools who came along for a good time and although I think it was good of Mrs Tanner to apologise surely the head teachers of Dr Challenors (boys and girls school), Beconsfeild high, and Beconsfeild Secondary just to name a few, all need to apologise.

that is all...
