New chickens arrive at Chalfonts Community College
A GROUP of chickens have set up home at the Chalfonts Community College.
At the end of the last school year, teachers and students at the school in Narcot Lane were saddened to lose their chickens, which had been nurtured from chicks to fully grown egg providers.
They had been tended by the students under the guidance of the science teachers and in particular Laura Beck.
In recent years Sue Tanner, principal of the school has worked alongside the Engage Education agency, which supports the college with its teacher recruitment needs.
On hearing of the loss of the old chickens, Rob Harvey of Engage Education, decided to help recruit some new birds, and this week a new batch arrived at the college.
They have now been homed in a brand new coop in the college grounds and have settled in well to their new environment.
Year nine students are now creating a diversity area in the part of the college grounds where the chickens are housed and in the future this will include bee hotels and bird houses.
Ms Beck said: "This project will give the year nine students the opportunity to work together, to develop a sense of ownership and responsibility through looking after the chickens.
"We are very grateful to Engage Education for funding the project."
