Emaciated pony found wandering in Chalfont St Peter
AN EMACIATED and ill pony was found dumped at a roadside in the early hours of the morning in Chalfont St Peter.
The animal was found wandering along Mumfords Lane at around 5.15am on Friday, October 16.
A passer-by contacted police and officers along with a vet managed to catch the terrified animal.
The female Shetland pony was found to be badly emaciated and with extremely poor teeth, and also has the disease strangles, an infectious illness of the respiratory system in horses.
She has now been placed in isolation at a veterinary surgery.
RSCPA inspector James Bromley said: "This pony was in a terrible state. We don't know if she was dumped because she has strangles, but whatever the reason, no animal deserves to be neglected and abandoned in this way."
Those found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal could face a maximum six-month prison sentence and a £20,000 fine.
One resident, who lives near to Mumfords Lane, said: "I could not believe it when I heard the news. How anyone could treat a defenceless animal in this way is unthinkable.
"It is a really cruel thing to do, but I'm glad that the pony was eventually found and is now being taken of by responsible people."
The RSPCA wants to hear from anyone who knows where the pony came from or who her owner is.
She is grey and is of the Shetland breed, although she is quite tall for this type of animal, and measures between 12 and 13 hands high.
She is believed to be between two and three-and-a-half years old.
Anyone with any information can call the RSPCA in confidence on 0300 1234 999.
