See how you'll look in five years with C-S-P beauty therapist
IF YOU were offered the chance to see into the future, to view a photograph of your own face in five years' time, would you be brave enough to do it?
That's what I did at the invitation of Beauty Therapist Helen Griffith who works from her home in Ashlea Road, Chalfont St Peter.
Every so often Helen organises skin analysis events which involve an in depth analysis of the facial skin, and I was invited to take a session.
Environ consultant Holly Foster - who has gorgeous skin - asked me to put my head inside a sort of miniature photo booth and hold still.
Within seconds, eight photographs of my face, all side on and all highlighting different problems with my skin, were on the screen of her laptop.
The first showed that I have twelve wrinkles on the right side of my face. The second showed underlying skin damage, which can't be seen with the naked eye yet, but which will reveal itself as dark patches or stains later in life. Other pictures showed broken veins, red patches and other imperfections.
Holly said: "Your skin is very dehydrated and this makes your fine lines and wrinkles show more. You've got quite a few broken veins on the side of your nose and there's quite a lot of high colour. You're obviously very sensitive to heat."
I must admit I have never been one for keeping up a regular skincare routine.
I haven't ever been for a consultation before, or read up about skin care, and I have never considered buying up market skin creams. I've always assumed they're all marketing and packaging.
However, Holly and Helen explained that while many ingredients contained in creams such as plant extracts and essential oils will moisturise your skin to an extent, only creams containing vitamin A will get "deep down" and do any real good as vitamin A is naturally produced in the skin and therefore recognised and absorbed more effectively. The cornerstone of the Environ range is vitamin A.
Holly said: "Just because your skin feels nice after you've put on a cream, doesn't mean that it's doing any good."
By using the right products, they told me, I can stop the sun damage from changing the pigmentation of my skin, as it is likely to do in years to come, and I can actually reverse some of the signs of ageing.
Holly showed me a picture of how my face will look in five years time if I don't use the right products and just continue with my current regime - which consists of taking off make up with cleanser and applying moisturiser that doesn't contain vitamin A, and takes less than one minute.
She said it is absolutely essential to wear sun screen every day, even if it's not sunny. It's vital that this is "broad spectrum," in other words that it protects against both UVA and UVB light, but most brands do not do this, they said.
Holly recommended five different products on my skin morning and night: a pre-cleanser to break down the grime accumulated daily in my skin, a cleanser to get rid of it, a moisturiser containing vitamin A, an eye gel containing argireline which is apparently "a natural version of Botox", and finally, a colostrum gel for the entire face and neck to strengthen and build collagen in the skin. Not toner, apparently my skin is too sensitive right now to use toner.
Surprised that so many different products were recommended, I asked whether this was really necessary, and both Holly and Helen revealed that they had suffered for years with skin blemishes until they discovered the Environ range.
Holly suffers from keratosis pilaris, a bumpy rash on her arms. She said: "After 24 years I've found a product that has really reduced it."
And Helen had a dark pigmentation on her right cheek which emerged during pregnancy and stayed. After regular use of an Environ product for two years, you can no longer make out the dark patch when she is wearing make-up.
I must admit that I haven't rushed out and bought all these products. I'm sure I wouldn't be disciplined enough to apply them all. But the session has got me thinking and when my current batch of cleanser and moisturiser runs out, I'll probably I'll try some from Environ and see if it makes a difference.
Helen is running another of these events on Friday November 27. For more information or to book a 45 minute appointment telephone Helen Griffiths on 07920 461847.
