Meeting to take place to discuss Holy Cross plans
A HUGE public meeting is set to take place at the weekend to further discuss the future of the Holy Cross site in Chalfont St Peter.
Residents are being invited along to the Chalfonts Community College at 10am on Saturday morning to talk about the development of the historic site, which has been earmarked for the building of a series of flats and an old people's home.
Under government guidelines, Chiltern District Council (CDC) must find room for 2,700 new homes, and it has been suggested that more than 700 of these be built in Chalfont St Peter.
Last month, a public display was held in the village library on behalf of the nuns who still own the Holy Cross site which was home to a convent school until 2006.
Residents have so far been incensed at the proposals which they fear will hugely alter the character of the village.
There are also huge concerns about the strain the development will put on the village's infrastructure.
Peter Dines, who represents the nuns, will be present at the meeting on Saturday.
Richard Allen, chairman of Chalfont St Peter parish council, said: "This is a huge issue for the village and we are expecting a very big turn out.
"I would like to encourage as many people as possible to go along to the meeting and make their feelings known.
"The more people who come along the better. At previous public meetings we have had a lot of people coming along, and we think that we will have another big crowd on Saturday."
The parish council has posted flyers through the doors of every home in the village in order to raise awareness about the issue.
Another meeting was held in September, which attracted a big crowd, and it is hoped that this meeting will continue to keep people aware of the threat that the village could be facing.
