Group set up to fight Holy Cross plans
AN ACTION group has been set up to fight the building of hundreds of new homes in Chalfont St Peter.
The group, which is called SENSE4CSP, was initially established to fight the extension of the National Society for Epilepsy (NSE) in Chesham Lane, but has now turned its attention to Chiltern District Council's (CDC's) plans to build 720 dwellings in the village.
These would be built in areas including the currently vacant Newlands Park area, as well as the historic Holy Cross site, which was once the home of a convent school.
The group has this week been posting leaflets through the doors of every home in Chalfont St Peter to make villagers aware of what they are trying to achieve.
The leaflets aim to warn people of the potential impact the various developments would have on the village and it urges people to get in touch with Cheryl Gillan, MP for the area, to express their views.
Chalfont St Peter parish council has already hosted a number of special meetings to try and gauge feeling on the issue among residents, and is preparing a village design statement to present to CDC, which will offer an alternative to their plans.
However, SENSE are operating independently of the parish council, and as such are able to go much further in expressing their views on the subject.
The leaflet says: "Chalfont St Peter now faces a disastrous future if Chiltern District Council get it's way. Having fallen desperately behind on their central government planning quotas, our town planners have drawn up a Draft Core Strategy document that singles out our village as the main recipient for high density housing in the area. At a staggering 720 dwellings, Chalfont
St Peter will be sacrificed to make up their shortfalls.
"This must not be allowed to happen. We all have to make ourselves heard and object against this ill considered document, as once it is approved, it will be impossible to contest against
inappropriate schemes like those intended for the Holy Cross site, the back gardens in Nortoft
Road and Newlands Park."
