Panic buyers raid village supermarket

SHOPPERS in Chalfont St Peter have "stripped bare" a supermarket after panicking that the snowy weather would leave them without supplies.
On Tuesday evening, after the Met Office had issued warnings about the overnight snowfall and had forecast even worse weather throughout the day on Wednesday, shoppers visiting Budgens in Market Place were shocked to find it had run out of essentials such as milk, bread, eggs and meat.

Huge queues were also reported in Sainsbury's in Beaconsfield and Tesco in Amersham, as panic buyers stocked up after anticipating becoming stuck in their homes.
Jim Carter, 50, of Chalfont St Peter, said: "Budgens had been pretty much stripped bare of its essentials. The place looked as if people were gearing up for nuclear war or the Blitz or something. It was madness.
"I couldn't believe it. I popped in on my way back from work and the queues were enormous. You would think that we were on the brink of war rather than just a day of snow.
"I would have thought that most people would have their fridges well stocked anyway with the Christmas period having just finished, but there were people there with huge trolley loads of food.
"It was ridiculous. I can see why people might think they need some food if they can't get to the shops, but if everyone only took what they needed, then the shop wouldn't run out. I have never seen such an over the top reaction to something."
All the schools in Chalfont St Peter, Gerrards Cross, Chalfont St Giles and Denham were closed because of the weather on Thursday, giving youngsters their second unscheduled day off in under a month.
