Mixed feelings as Winkers nightclub faces demolition
WINKERS nightclub in Chalfont St Peter could face closure if planning permission is granted to build new homes on the site.
The club in Denham Lane, which attracts clubbers from all over the region, faces demolition if plans submitted to Chiltern District Council (CDC) by Provenance Developments Ltd are granted.
The plans would see four detached homes being built at the site, with the long running club making way for them.
In a statement sent to CDC by Carter Planning development consultants, it states that: "The preferred option is to demolish all the existing commercial buildings [Winkers nightclub] and remove the car parking and hardstanding areas, and to introduce a traditonal and more attractive and benign development of dwellings, namely houses or flats which are in character with the surroundings and adjoining residential development."
The news has had a mixed response from the community.
Paula Conrad, of nearby Joiners Lane, said: "I'm sure that young people will be uspet if the nightclub goes but anyone who lives near it certainly won't be.
"It creates noise throughout the night, there is always lots of shouting with people leaving, the police are always around it and it is open until the early hours.
"The weekends can be a nightmare with the amount of disruption it causes. Knocking it down and replacing it with detached homes would be great for everyone who lives nearby."
However, youngsters in the village are angry at the plans.
Jake Chappell, 19, said: "Winkers has been there for years and it's a great night out. If you live in South Bucks, there's not much to do for young people at the weekend, and Winkers is a great place to go.
"People don't think about what we want. If Winkers closed down we will have nothing to do at all at weekends, and the amount of people my age hanging around on the streets will increase, which I'm sure will annoy people more than the nightclub."
Winkers owner Penny Maynard declined to comment on the application.
She said: "The nightclub is still currently open for business."
A decision will be made at a future meeting of Chiltern District Council's planning committee.

That's outrageous !! Winkers night club has been there for years it has given many fond memorys to people of all generations. Building houses would lead to chaos as yobs people won't have anything to do after pubs close !! Save winkers , save memory's and save bordem
Week after week drunken yobs amass up there and think they have the right to cause any disturbance they like. Why is it necessary to visit Winkers once the pubs are closed. By then most of these yobs have had enough to drink.
i lived for my whole childhood and young adult life, only a few hundred meters from winkers. The roaring drunks passing by and relocating the the local 'for sale' signs at 2am every thursday friday and saturday, was a regular feature. often i was woken to see revelers actually in my parents front garden, but usually they were just stumbing down the road loudly breaking up, making up, arguing, and laughing etc etc. doing all the normal drunk things young people do. its been nothing but entertainment. i would be very saddened if future generations didnt get to do this too. its a right of passage for the local area. to get blotto in winkers, and shout down the street all the way home. we all did it,we enjoyed it, why should we stop the next lot having their ultimately harmless fun? i have no intention of going again, ive grown up and out of it, but i hope winkers continues to live and provide the same service for all the next generations of local kids.
