Winkers development splits village opinion
LETTERS of support and objection have flooded into Chiltern District Council (CDC) as they consider whether to approve an application to demolish Winkers nightclub and replace it with flats.
The application was made to CDC in November last year by Provenance Homes, and if approved would see the long-standing Chalfont St Peter nightclub knocked down to make way for a building with 12 flats and parking.
The plans have been met with approval from many nearby residents, who say that noise from the nightclub has impacted on their lives.
However, many youngsters who attend the club have written to CDC urging them to reject the plans, saying that there will be nothing for them to do if Winkers was to be demolished.
CDC has now released all of the correspondence it has received over the past two months, with the opinions of people split at nearly 50/50. No date has been set yet for a final decision.
Romano Chelotti, of Joiners Lane, Chalfont St Peter, wrote to say: "I fully support this application and hope that the council take a favourable view to this new development and give comfort to the long suffering residents that have been blighted by this venue."
But Matthew Hill, 20, of Chalfont St Peter, who regularly attends the club, said: "Winkers is a great nightclub and one of the only ones left in Bucks.
"The club is the only place in Chalfont St Peter which attracts younger people."
A campaign on social networking site Facebook to keep the club open has attracted nearly 800 members.
Thomas Desmond, 23, another regular at the club, said: "There will be more anti-social behaviour on the streets of Chalfont St Peter than there is with Winkers open, and people will realise what a good thing it has been for the village if it were to close."
However, nearby residents are convinced that the closure will benefit Chalfont St Peter in the long run.
Kay McLeod, of the Paddock, near to Winkers, said: "The development will improve unsocial behaviour in the village and decrease the careless driving in the evening at the weekends on the A413."
