NEW planning laws announced by the Government this week could make large scale housing developments more likely in Chalfont St Peter and Chalfont St Giles, local people fear.
The guidelines, which were revealed on Tuesday, encourage development on previously built on land across the UK, to tackle the housing shortage.
People in Buckinghamshire are now concerned the rules mean it is more likely large-scale housing developments such as plans to build 264 homes at Newland Park, between Chalfont St Peter and Chalfont St Giles, will now be given the go-ahead.
Thomas Norton, 65, who lives in nearby Gorelands Lane, has written to Chiltern District Council opposing the scheme. "If the Government is making new rules to make it easier to build new houses, it makes it very likely that we are going to see increased development in Buckinghamshire," he said.
"Chalfont St Peter will be an ideal place for it because there is a lot of vacant land here. It has been likely for a long time that there will be development here, but I think this makes it almost a certainty."
Chalfont St Peter Parish Council has begun the process of its judicial review against plans approved by the district council in 2010 to allow housing on the Holy Cross site.
Richard Allen, of the parish council, said: "In terms of the review, the new guidelines don't have an effect, because we are fighting a decision made under the previous system. It does mean, though, that any future application is more likely to get the go ahead, both at Holy Cross and at Newland Park."
Newland Park, set between Chalfont St Peter and St Giles, was, until 2008, the Chalfonts campus of Bucks New University.
It acted as home to 700 students, and since it closed nearly four years ago, it has remained vacant.
