CAMPAIGNERS who are trying to have a patch of woodland reclassified as a village green to protect it from developers say it would be 'a tragedy' if it was ever built on.

Jackie Edington and Robert Leschhorn of South Park Drive, Gerrards Cross are fighting to get a 19-acre patch of woodland between their homes and the A413 reclassified as woodland by Bucks County Council to stop potential developers building homes on it.

NEW planning laws announced by the Government this week could make large scale housing developments more likely in Chalfont St Peter and Chalfont St Giles, local people fear.

The guidelines, which were revealed on Tuesday, encourage development on previously built on land across the UK, to tackle the housing shortage.

People in Buckinghamshire are now concerned the rules mean it is more likely large-scale housing developments such as plans to build 264 homes at Newland Park, between Chalfont St Peter and Chalfont St Giles, will now be given the go-ahead.

Thomas Norton, 65, who lives in nearby Gorelands Lane, has written to Chiltern District Council opposing the scheme. "If the Government is making new rules to make it easier to build new houses, it makes it very likely that we are going to see increased development in Buckinghamshire," he said.

"Chalfont St Peter will be an ideal place for it because there is a lot of vacant land here. It has been likely for a long time that there will be development here, but I think this makes it almost a certainty."

Chalfont St Peter Parish Council has begun the process of its judicial review against plans approved by the district council in 2010 to allow housing on the Holy Cross site.

Richard Allen, of the parish council, said: "In terms of the review, the new guidelines don't have an effect, because we are fighting a decision made under the previous system. It does mean, though, that any future application is more likely to get the go ahead, both at Holy Cross and at Newland Park."

THE bypass between Chalfont St Peter and Denham is closed in both directions.

HOUSE spiders are said to have reached record size this year and are thought to be particularly prevalent in rural areas.
A combination of a hot spring, wet summer and warm autumn has caused the creepy crawlies to grow larger than normal, and homes across Bucks are likely to be attractive locations for them, due to their rural location.
Has your house been invaded by the creatures in the last few weeks? If so, we want your pictures and stories.

EVER since the plans for HS2 to run through the Chilterns were first mooted, there has been almost universal condemnation from our readers.
